INTERNATIONAL TALK-LIKE-A-PIRATE-DAY IS SEPTEMBER 19TH
Costume Shop to Celebrate with Pirate Party

Newnan GA Sept 11, 2007--Are you ready for Talk-Like-a-Pirate–Day? While not as popular as Christmas or Labor Day or even Arbor Day, Talk-Like-a-Pirate-Day is a recognized and heartily celebrated international holiday. On Talk-Like-a-Pirate-Day, people awaken transformed: their voices deeper, their usual walk replaced by a seaman’s swagger and whenever they speak, it is with the voice of a pirate. For example, you would greet friends not with "Hello", but with "Ahoy, me hearty!"

Talk-Like-a-Pirate-Day was invented in 1995 by John Baur ("Ol' Chumbucket") and Mark Summers ("Cap'n Slappy"), who proclaimed September 19th each year as the day when everyone in the world should talk like a pirate.

This year, in honor of the holiday, Costume Shop in Downtown Newnan is throwing a Talk-Like-a-Pirate-Day celebration on Wednesday, September 19th from 12:00pm to 6:00pm. There will be face painting and refreshments (provided by the new Broad Street Bakery) all day with a pirate costume contest at 5:30. Costume Shop will also be offering discounts on their pirate costumes and accessories, starting today, if you mention Talk-Like-a-Pirate-Day.

At first an inside joke between Baur and Summers, the holiday gained exposure when they sent a letter about their invented holiday to syndicated humor columnist Dave Barry in 2002. Barry liked the idea and promoted the day. Growing media coverage of the holiday ensured that this event is now celebrated internationally.

“We love this holiday and want people to have a place to unleash their inner pirate in a fun and supportive atmosphere,” said Samantha Hinze, Head Wench at Costume Shop. “Everyone should be able to talk like a pirate on this one day, even if they don’t feel comfortable addressing their boss or teacher as ‘ye’ old scurvy dog’”.
